Sounds From the Other Side: Paris’ Slow Churned ButterClock

Fragile haunting female vocals riding over doomy R&B beats and slow reverb drenched rumbles? Sounds like my kind of thing.

ButterClock is a young Parisian who makes some great gothic downtempo along the lines of The XX or Bat For Lashes. It’s atmospheric and slow and very French. There are moments where you can see the influence of witch house bands like oOoOO, (pronounced “oh” not “insert ghost noise”) as well as a  jazzy vocal stylings now and again. She sums up her influences as Warren G and Silvia Plath and that’s pretty much a dead on description.

ButterClock takes you off on a blurred red wine coma of journey that leaves you curled up asleep in the back of a deserted theatre, the strains of the sub base from next doors club filtering through the dusty walls.

There are only a few tracks available to hear online and all of them seem to have that eclecticism of an artist still finding her sound. Hopefully it goes in an even darker direction like that Zola Jesus white noise and epic vocal combo coming through in her track “Alaska”. Check out ButterClock’s Myspace for a bunch more songs and videos too.

The Better Than Sex blog had some words about her last month including some talk of Brooklyn show dates., but nothing confirmed just yet. Either way, Butterclock is someone to keep an eye on for sure.

Thanks for the namedrop, I love this blog and it was rad to see mine mentioned. Even radder to see ButterClock on here, she’s amazing and I hope she gets a ton more attention AND makes it out to NYC this fall.
