What the Fuck is Starcraft?

This big game came out a little while ago, you might have heard of it? It’s called Starcraft II.  It went on to sell 1 Zillion copies in an hour and ruin human productivity for at least the next 5 years.  So I had never played a Starcraft game before and I thought I would give it a little spin.

How is it?  I don’t know….have you ever played a War/Real-Time Strategy game before?  I think they are boring as fuck.  It’s a lot of building for a half hour and then you either get your ass tore up or you unceremoniously do the tearing….very little in between.  And the space drama is as tired as ever.  Three races: Space Marines with Power Armor (read: Starship Troopers), CHECK!  Up close and personal Alien (read: Aliens), CHECK!  Lastly, High Tech Smart Race (read: Predator), CHECK!.  YAWN.

I mean, if you haven’t tried one of these games before, you might as well start here…the presentation is pretty amazing and the game feels expensive, but that’s about it.  Oh, well there is this kind of cool thing where every time you end a mission you go back on your ship and buy upgrades and chat with your crew like in mass effect.  But then there are other lame things like how there are 3 different races but you only get to play as one of them (not counting those 4 bonus Protoss Missions).  Or how if you have played any Command & Conquer game or Warcraft game or….ANY RTS, you have played this game before.  This genre is stale as loaf of Wonder Bread found by the characters from The Road.

Anyway, the real reason I am talking about Starcraft II is that it gives me an excuse to talk about it in relation to South Korea.  South Koreans, for those who don’t know, love them some Starcraft. Starcraft is practically the national sport of South Korea where people pay money to watch matches in stadiums.  In South Korea there is not one but TWO stations dedicated to Starcraft.  Sponsored Starcraft players make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.  So yeah, Starcraft is a big fucking deal in South Korea.  Check out the videos below for knowledge and laughs.

it sounds like you just dont like this genre at all… thats like hating on a racing game because you still race around a track.. or madden because its still football.

why was this review written by someone that doesnt like ANY RTS games? are the tv re-ups going to be written by people who dislike the show next? maybe we cant get someone who hates dubstep to put together the next keep watch mix?

this article did nothing except allow for a rant which no one asked for.and for the record.. im not an RTS fan either.. but i certainly wouldnt write a ‘review’ for it.

It wasn’t really a review at all. I played the game and gave some thoughts. I think the point was to write a post from the perspective of someone who ISN’T a starcraft or RTS nerds….as most of the readers of this site will not fit those categories. So what will THEY think when they play starcraft 2? Probably exactly what I thought because it’s not that great a game unless you are REALLY into real-time strategy games.

And for the record I don’t hate the whole genre, as I said it is just stale. The RTS games from 10 years ago are pretty much exactly the same as the RTS games of today. And while your example about sports game is valid pretty much every other videogame genre has evolved in the last 10 years. I will not feel bad for expecting more out of videogames. Especially a videogame that cost $60 bucks and only 1/3rd complete (no Zerg or Protoss campaigns is pretty much an unforgivable sin).

If you want a review praising Starcraft 2 then go to pretty much ANY other site on the internet.

Man this was a shit post. The writing was awful, and why would I want to read your thoughts on a game you played that you clearly don’t understand. The big deal about starcraft 2 is the balancing in the multiplayer, which you didn’t talk about. Your reference to The Road felt wicked forced. Leave these kinds of posts to Caffeine Powered plz.

I don’t understand Starcraft 2? What is there to understand? I wrote a post about how the singleplayer aspect of Starcraft 2 is the same old same old…which you didn’t even refute. I didn’t talk about the multiplayer aspects of Starcraft 2 because I didn’t play it multiplayer…because I didn’t want to. I didn’t lie and say “the mulitiplayer sucked”, so what are you even complaining about? Chill out bro. Go back to battle.net, you are wasting precious time, you could be mining vespene gas!

I need to start off by saying that I am a big SC fan, and I have been ever since the battle chest was released… i remember picking it up from costco and there went my sophmore/freshman year in HS… I never really got into any other RTS games though..

I would say that SC2 is similar to the original.. The first time i noticed a large break was when WarCraft 3 came out, and you had to micromanage a lot more in order to succeed. You had a hero (supped up unit) as well as various creeps (npc villains) that stop you from expanding too quickly.. it was pretty good and refreshing.

The incorporation of a decent amount of new units and new abilities changes the game drastically… and while it is similar.. one could also make the argument that all fighting games are similar because they all include button combination and timing.. . but most people can feel the difference between Tekken and Street Fighter (yay crossovers)…

At any rate, the multiplayer is definitely worth a looksy because there is potential for other custom maps and custom games that are completely different than just simple RTS… so to provide a more comprehensive first look, the multiplayer should be experienced..

Starcraft never really grabbed me as a game.. Warcraft is still my all time favourite.. Just waiting for the next new thing to play..
