Niche Fetish: Go! Tokoji Go!

Still from 'Go! Tokoji Go!' stop-motion video thing.

Fair warning: I have been awake, at work, and writing for the past 22 hours. There is—forsooth!—no end in sight for me yet. So if I sound more retarded and/or mushmouthed than usual, well, you have my smiling apologies. Or something. And I say that affectionately. To you.

This week I thought I’d do something different. it’s the same old NF fair where I talk about whatever it is that I feel like talking about—in the weird toy/collectible world, that is—but in the interest of killing two nerds with one stone, I’ll share a little fan video I made for Koji Harmon/Cometdebris this week. Here’s some backstory. Ahem.

Somehow, I managed to find myself at this link. I think it was related to the k-hole of links that I was led down when Crook posted this, um, post. Softcore boobies abound. It was either that, or the fine folks at TTCT tweeted it. One or the other. Either way, I was not only impressed by the pretty girls (duh) but I thought it was a pretty cool idea to jumpcut a bunch of photos taken in sequence as a video. Nothing new, but still.

So, I set about making something similar—for fun—with my toys, and what better toy to start with than the ever-expressive, boundlessly fun Tokoji Seijin? That plan rapidly evolved into a movie that would include all of my Koji/Cometdebris (the creator of Tokoji Seijin) toys and that was that. The only thing left was to improvise a little ‘booth’ and figure out how to open iMovie.

Go! Tokoji Go! Project Screencap

The results are—I think—crude, but fun. Crude because you are literally looking at about 6 minutes worth of experience with making videos, but FUN because the toys are so happy and goofy, and the radical TRS-80 soundtrack doesn’t hurt, either. Upon sending it to Koji, I got a very unexpected—and actually sort of ridiculously embarassingly flattering—response:

Thanks for posting (and making) that video. Made me smile. Very cool. It wasn’t inspired by this, was it? This totally came to mind after watching.

I am a huge Eames fan, but I had never seen that video. As I have expressed countless times here, I am a YouNoob. But this video is just so totally amazingly awesome forever and ever that I just can’t believe that some dumb stop-motion thing I tried to do made him think of that. So it was a good day, that day. :) Thanks Koji!

Go! Tokoji Go! PS.

Anyway. Enjoy. Hopefully something for everybody. Where everybody is a subset of folks who are already a) reading this, b) like toys, c) don’t skip my posts automatically. So yeah, at the very least it’s a warm lead going out to all dozen of you. That’s what friends are for!

Awesome stuff! I’m in the process of starting my own long awaited Kaiju collection, or more so, starting it off right. I’ve got a few randoms here or there from purchases in the past, but I put off my vinyl buying for too long now. Do you mostly get yours from conventions or are there any good sites (aside from lulubell and Kid Robot, Super 7) you’d be willing to share?
