Soul Shine, Soul Glow, So So Po-Mo, Catch Das Racist on the Southside Kickin’ it With Shlomo
Our in-store concert series keeps rolling and rolling. Next to perform are our boys in brown, Heems, Kool A.D. and Dapwell of Das Racist. Holy fuck have these guys been blowing up! I still remember the day our then designer Brian was like “yo check out my boys and their video.” He played me the “Chicken & Meat” video early in ’09 and I was instantly bewildered and enamored with what I saw and heard. Plus I was definitely flattered seeing Heems, who we didn’t know at the time was rocking three to four different pieces of Мишка in the video.
We eventually got to know the group around the time “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell” (and it’s remix) was making the rounds on the Internet. They were intelligent, witty and talented, and you knew that they weren’t just going to be a one time meme. I remember our first real meeting this past January to discuss getting Shut Up, Dude out there. When they dropped off the final mix for the album I thought it was incredible, but I honestly wasn’t expecting people to warm up to DR as quickly as they did. Then there was Sit Down, Man, a Pitchfork Best New Music nod, airplay on Hot 97 and in a very short while these dudes have come into their own.
I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face, alongside Odd Future these guys make the most goddamn exciting Hip Hop I’ve heard in a long time. When we were putting together Sit Down, Man I emailed Heems and Kool A.D. and said “this is my favorite Hip Hop release since Purple Haze.” I really meant that and I’ll be pretty peeved if I see a bunch of best of 2010 lists without one or both of these releases. These dudes are going to drop the next Paul’s Boutique sometime soon and I’m thrilled that we got to be part of their ride in helping them go where they’re going.
Our last in-store with Twin Shadow was absolutely bananas, we had to turn a lot of people away at the door at a certain point (but thankfully you could still hear the concert pretty clearly from the street). I’m not expecting any less for Das Racist and highly recommend you guys arrive early to ensure you get into the show.
Those of you there will get first crack at seeing and buying Das Racist’s first ever piece of merch, a tee designed by us. It’s going to be incredible show and we hope you all can join us this Thursday.
P.S. our landlord’s name is actually Shlomo and he is a big DR fan… but we told him that Kool A.D. is actually Israeli :/
