Мишка Presents The Guide to Grave Wave (3 Disc Compilation & Feature Article) [Free Download]

1. Grave Wave |grāv-wāv| noun:
A term used to describe the recent musical upswing of all things dark and deathly. Encompasses witch house, post punk, neofolk, EBM, death rock, goth, electro, 80s revivalists, batcave purists, et al. Frequently accompanied by a strong graphic aesthetic: symbols, videos, visual and performance art. Sometimes creeps into the mainstream (see: Cold Cave, The Horrors). Sometimes remains purposefully under-underground (see: twYlY< ght >ZoNe).

Grave Wave is taking over—musically, duh, but look at fashion, television, movies; dark and deathly is obviously our cultural cup of tea. So how did we get here in the first place? Years of whistle-happy twee and candied pop stars, no doubt, plus the bleakest US economy—and most conflicted international agenda—loads of us have ever seen. Jobless and politically/musically disenfranchised does not a happy bunch of artists make.

And still, despite some solid reasons to be in a dark fucking place, misery isn’t grave wave’s only defining thing. If these circumstances were its sole founding factors—and darkness its only measure of ingenuity—we’d be looking at a landscape more similar to Reagen-era hardcore…except, you know, already done to death. What’s actually happening here is two-fold: a well-timed gust of goth nostalgia—kids raised on diets of Sisters of Mercy, Peter Murphy, Ministry and Wax Trax, back when these sorts of things were more likely to earn you a black eye than cool cred—repurposed by a generation openly using the internet not only to promote music, but create it as well. Samples, visual mash-ups, borrowed images, appropriation of other genres and artists; all perfected by the internet age, and thrust into critical mass via the onslaught of dark bedroom projects looking to make their output just a little more interesting. Videos are de rigeur. Remixes, digital books, zines, samples, self-released albums—all insanely easy to source and produce. If the grave wavers aren’t changing the world, they’re certainly helping redefine the way their music lives within it. And that music, by the way? Really fucking good. None of this would matter if it wasn’t. Meet the new cutting edge…

  1. Work the Angle Says:

WOW. This is pretty awesome. I’m not super into Witchhouse but I love bands like Cccandy, Hussle Club and Blessure Grave. Going to give some of these groups another listen while checking this out. Thanks Mishka

  2. Marcus Says:

    Already unavailable on megaupload??

  3. My Pal the Crook Says:

Just give it a moment, Megaupload is weird sometimes. Disc 2 and 3 are fine.

  4. ghost-punk Says:

    no We Are Hex?

  5. My Pal the Crook Says:

I’d just like to give props to our ex-intern and employee Bryan for coining the term “Grave Wave” for a bunch of the music being played at the offices and in-store when he first started working here.

We all loved the term, thought it not only aptly described everything but was also silly and playful and decided to with it. I also love that judging from Twitter it’s clearly upsetting some people. Double awesome.

  6. My Pal the Crook Says:

If you’re a photog whose image of a band we used in the feature and you would like to be credited please let us know so we can credit you by your image.

  7. Hours of Worship Says:

Could’ve put the Hours of Worship remix of “Stranger in the House.”

  8. My Pal the Crook Says:

    :(

we’re making up for that though.

  9. kneesee Says:

what an interesting term- grave wave. i can appreciate.

  10. Sandy Leper Says:

wheres dream boat and glass teeth?!

  11. Nattymari Says:

I was a footnote. YAY! I mean it. Obset and Ibid rule. Honestly, thanks guys… most of these folks have been on the radar for almost two years. The fact that I’m a map blip is really phkkn dope!

  12. SORTAHUMAN Says:

love the term, and these are awesome mixs. totally how im feeling right now

  13. My Pal the Crook Says:

Dream Boat being excluded was an oversight and something I realized as soon as the article published. It wasn’t intentional at all. I really like Dream Boat and we’ve posted about him numerous times. But at a certain point we had to just had to stop or we’d never have finished. There were new bands sprouting up every week and we kind of knew some bands were going to get excluded. But any exclusion wasn’t supposed to be “you suck!” you can’t be on this list.

Nattymari is another example of someone who was an oversight but we all like. I feel silly that he made it in as a footnote for “see” but we didn’t get him an entry.

  14. AV! Says:

    grave n roll

  15. Vortex Rikers Says:

    wow, thank you!

  16. I†† Says:

    Thank you for including I††.
    Love the term Grave Wave.
    Love the article.
    Love the mixes.

  17. Meatbreak Says:

Incredible scenes here, great work guys. I am pretty sad not to see DreamBoat in here, but I can imagine how much of an impossible task finalizing this stuff must have been. Pretty sure I was talking to Fokkawolfe about the rise of GraveWave back in March. Can I claim my postfootnote please?

    MxBx

  18. //TENSE// Says:

Bravo guys, this ended up looking so so good! Wow, awesome job. THANKYOU!

ADD DESIRE TO THE LABEL LIST! //TENSE//, Loom 11, Kasms, Project Komakino, Soft Metals/Jewels of the Nile split on the way…

  19. My Pal the Crook Says:

    Yup. That’s another oversight…

  20. doomed Says:

This is exactly what we don’t need, another google friendly ‘genre tag’ catering to hype. Why put a label on it? Do you want your band to be labeled with this term? I’m actually surprised that some of these bands actually gave you permission to include them in your article. What you’ve just done is branded something with a stupid term that more stupid people will use and thus making it stupid. Remember Electroclash?

There are some bands on this list that are actually doing something genuine and interesting with their sound (xeno and oaklander, innergaze, cccandy, factums, white car, martial canterel, etc). But then there are the the symbol bands (i.e wingding wave?!)….which is obvious who they are ripping off.

Please stop. Your not creating a new subculture, your not opening the minds of virgin ears, your not doing anything that hasn’t been done before. What you ARE doing is boxing in music by putting it in a nice little package, perpetuating exactly what these artists don’t need. Anyone who actually cares about this music (and not fashion/hype) knows that this article is bullshit. Take reference from Laibach and ‘LET IT BE’.

  21. My Pal the Crook Says:

Dude, take a chill pill and shut up.

  22. //TENSE// Says:

TO DOOMED: Did you read this article? They are not saying that this is the definitive genre term in any way. Not once do they say that. What this article does do is list and describe a bunch of really good modern bands. Period. What are you doing? Way to go Mishka! XO

  23. My Pal the Crook Says:

Bobby, don’t even bother. I’m sure you’ve met countless “Doomeds” in your life. They prefer to keep things they like to themselves and whatever small group they deem worthy of enjoying and understanding it.

Doomed: I really could have cared less about things being labeled “Electroclash” early on in the 00s. Shitty Electroclash bands were shitty Electroclash bands, and the good ones were good ones so who cared if there was an umbrella term now to described a new wave of Electro inspired music? Stupid and smart people alike ALL probably listen and like the same shit you like. What difference does inventing genre’s really make?

People assign and create genres and new terms all the time. It’s a function of language and trying to make sense of the changing world around you. It’s been done since the beginning of time and won’t ever stop. Are you also pissed off that someone had the goddamn audacity to go label a particular style of rock music “Punk?”

So you want me to apologize because because you feel “this term” now floating around may lead to some of these bands getting more exposure and ears for their amazing music? God help me, what have we done!

You don’t like the tern, don’t use it and call these bands whatever the hell you want. No one has a gun to your head.

  24. Matty Says:

Doomed – this did expose me to some of these bands. Case closed

  25. deafmetal Says:

Damn. Disc 1 still won’t show up for me in megaupload… :-( anyone have a mediafire or similar?

  26. Nattymari Says:

I think what attracts me to the whole “genre” (as I don’t even see how my music qualifies sometimes) is the fact that it seems a genre of endless possibilities. To me Witch House, Grave Wave etc… is just a neat little calling card that seems to attract people who are commited to fucking music up proper. From Mushy’s VNHOLY GROVND, the countless David Lynch references, MSV’s hat tip to Goblin, the mix to the tributes to Screw that me and Party Trash did (unbeknownst to either) to the fact that everyone’s Facebook page’s are paying tribute to Sleazy from T.G., I think its obvious that everyone in this bastard genre are fully aware of their past and pay tribute to it daily.

Surfing the Soundcloud for related artists reveals an amazing variety of sounds… from EBM to no wave fuck funk to whatever the hell it is I do. I kind of love it.

  27. AV! Says:

    hype n roll!

  28. deafmetal Says:

Ahhh. Got it now. Thanks to everyone involved in this comp!

  29. Ian Says:

This may not be 100% comprehensive, but it’s the *most* comprehensive guide to this aptly-named trend. Great stuff, thnx a bunch. & doomed, naming it something random like grave wave is alot easier than describing the scene/subgenre/whatever’s many characteristics each time you make reference to it. that’s how language and culture WORK.

  30. john bender Says:

I can see what doomed is saying in regards to the ‘genre’ tag problem…..i mean….if i were a band on this list I would not want to be classified into a specific term deemed to represent a current trend. And what i mean by trend, mostly is the fact that ‘dark music’ has always been around…. but it’s more trendy now. There are labels that have put out this type of music for a very long time, and have gotten no recognition. I also agree that just letting it be and letting it build on it’s own is something that needs to happen. Putting a tag on ANYTHING is always a bad idea in my previous experiences with music. Whats wrong with just the classics (goth, industrial, experimental, etc…..b/c thats what it ultimately is). I’m not hating, just voicing my opinion on the subject. But I will say that “wingding wave” is hilarious and should be used more :)

  31. My Pal the Crook Says:

John: What’s wrong with just calling i Goth or Industrial is because of the presence of something like Witch House and the influence of Hip Hop, downtempo, Italo and IDM stuff on a lot of the music these new bands are making… they’re not just you’re daddy’s death-rock anymore.

  32. jesse Says:

awesome collection thnx, pdf is top notch. loved the surprise scum inclusion. a few picks are kinda obvious surprises but that shows its just kind of the vibe. i kinda hate tearist, is it an LA thing? i cant wait til like jul ’11 when the shiny new has worn off and you can say shit like “the NY Dolls are wankers!” man there’s a lot of stuff i havent heard, TY. also can i big-up ρθθDLε? also thnxx

  33. jesse Says:

isn’t it so much better when it’s dirty?

  34. the guide to grave wave « mixed goods Says:

  35. Mannequin Says:

To be honest, is completely missing Mannequin in this article. :-)

We released various bands involved in, like Led Er Est, Frank (Just Frank), Opus Finis, Mushy to name a few.

    thank you

    Alessandro

  36. Fokkawolfe Says:

    Grave Wave FTW!!

  37. jason Says:

    This is so horrible.

  38. My Pal the Crook Says:

    I know. It’s just awful.

  39. Cassandra Says:

Seriously, GuMMy†Be▲R! over Young Cream, Modern Witch, or White Ring?

  40. Rue Sauvage Says:

Modern Witch and White Ring are there. And Mannequin is mentioned both under Led Er Est and Opus Finis.

  41. front24blew Says:

I friend told me about this…but I had to see it with my own two eyes….it’s like looking at a burn victim, your not supposed to stare, but you can’t help it. The altered Bauhaus logo is completely unoriginal, and an indication of the lack of creativity. Music and fashion should remain separate entities, if you want to sell your boring shirts then that’s great….but don’t waste your time trying to do the music thing (b/c frankly, your not very good at either). And i’m also pretty sure that THIS GUY came up with the term GRAVEWAVE, so don’t take credit for your new ‘genre’. Now all you have to do is make a LAST FM page and then your placement on the internet will be ‘engraved in internet stone’.

    WINGDING WAVE 2011!!

  42. My Pal the Crook Says:

Dude, honestly what are you so angry about? We put out a comp with awesome bands and awesome songs on it, one that plenty of people are pretty stoked on. Oh no… we flipped the Bauhaus logo for the cover! That’s what we do, re-appropriation. Sorry for living.

As for said dude with a Deviantart account.. Ok and? Did he label a an influx of new music “Grave Wave?” No. He strung the words together for a his account name does his account have anything to do with say Zola Jesus or Mater Suspiria Vision? No. So he coined the term how exactly? And what was it supposed to describe? His Deviantart username? That’s not coining a term. That’s creating a username.

I had never even seen until you just pointed it ou, so bravo! Someone else was clever enough to string two words that rhyme together one after another for a different reason altogether. Great work Batman! But why not also throw the band called “Grave Wave” into the mix while you’re at it too? I just found them on Myspace. He too must have named it as an homage to growing tide of newly goth inspired music. Or just though Grave + Wave rhymed and sounded cool.

P.S. Someone already made a Last.FM group for it. You should join.

  43. %^&^ Says:

This is terrible. Pretty sure this guy: http://gravewave.deviantart.com/ coined the term gravewave.

fashion and music do not mix!

  44. My Pal the Crook Says:

You know i can see your IP address right? There’s no need to post twice as if you’re different people.

BTW thanks for the enlightening tip about fashion and music not mixing.

  46. Nattymari Says:

Can I also add that THE BAUHAUS logo is actually a design from a 1923 poster for the arichitectural school? It was a logo long before Peter Murphy donned skinny jeans and sang like David Bowie (yet another fashion victim… turn to the left.)

really, I could go on and on about the absurdity of Front 24′s statement. The Sex Pistols were models for Vivienne Westwood and were replaced by Adam and the Ants when they refused to wear Pirate gear for the upcoming line. Grace Jones was a model. Steve Strange a designer. Depeche Mode is French for FAST FASHION, innit?!?!?!

From the NY Dolls to Roxy Music to ska and skinhead drag, fashion is as much a part of subculture as anything else.

    Just a really idiotic statement.

omg so glad i came back. someone googling themself, pretending not to be themself, pretending that someone sent them here for a laugh, insulting the art because theirs has no intrinsic value, linking their account, and then pretending to be yet another internet lurker that stumbled by. And then getting schooled! Twice! No three times! Om nom nom mmm this is so tasty.
I guess you gotta get your name out there somehow.

  49. Nattymari Says:

I do believe that you, Jesse/Front 24, are the first LURKWAVE artist. Now all you need is some Triangles and fucked up remixes!

  50. My Pal the Crook Says:

Natty: Jesse has nothing to do with Front24blew. He commented earlier in the post. His recent comment was directed at Front24blew.

  51. Nattymari Says:

gotcha… my mistake. mistakes have uses though… I’m now forward thinking towards LURKWAVE and TROLLWAVE ;)

  52. My Pal the Crook Says:

I think that should be your next mix.

  53. Nattymari Says:

well you know us wh-ers and our endless quest for new Soundcloud genre tags ;) I think that it is again indicative of how smart this [scene] can be. For me, it’s a direct reaction to the countless new genres we are forced to encounter as fans of electronic music. As a blogger, you well know the trials and tribulations of making sure that what you are writing about is “drill & bass” and not “noisecore” or “glitch & tumble” (yeah I made that last one up – I’ll tag my next track on SC with it.)

  54. Rue Sauvage Says:

Nattymari, your genre-naming on this post is making my life. And I totally agree with what you’re saying re: electronic genres and sub-genres and sub-sub-genres. I get a kick out of appropriating that tradition, and I think so many of the micro-genres now are about being descriptive in an interesting (and sometimes funny) way. It’s not about creating a load of new terms people have to learn and use. Some of them take hold for sure, and rightly so, but others are just what you’re saying: a direct reaction to the onslaught.

As Robert said, where’s Desire Records? seriously!

I know you can’t put everything in, but Desire and us out is almost incredible :-)

  57. My Pal the Crook Says:

Dude can you quit it already? Yourdesperation in harping on and on about this isn’t winning you any sympathy. As you were told (at least 5 times), no one intended to slight you, and you were mentioned twice within the article. Let it go.

  58. jesse Says:

Lol while we’re being completists, nike7up is dope, fan death are freaking hitmakers. What about when the big pink were all droney and bizarre (HaWKERS, anyone)? Immolate Yourself was dark as hell.
The idea of fresh, forward-thinking, dark music can cast its arm around far too many bands than can fill 3 measly disks.
That being said, the immense task of cataloging a growing worldwide internet-inhabiting pseudo/micro-genre was handled tastefully and in a very listenable fashion.
My fav find so far is that terminal twilight track. I had the rather bland “The Lovers,” but “Fire” is dancefloor ready and delish. Thnx again.
Oh, George Quartz for the hell of it.

  59. Geoffrey W Says:

Surprised haven’t seen Pigeon Religion mentioned yet, toured with Blessure Grave (split cassette), tape on Campaign For Infinity (pink noise label w/ der tkp, bg, etc), artwork done by M.Adis of Salvation, and played with every band in the book (dadfag, stress ape, ccr headcleaner, drunkdriver, pygmy shrews, white mice, pop 1280, fucked up, mika miko, etc etc etc). Elements of everything from goth, industrial, post-punk, etc. Just a heads up.

Does it get more “grave wave” then having someone commit suicide to your band practicing?

  63. Pooks Says:

I have a number of issues with this.

It’s oversimplifying the music to genre-ify all of these artists. There are some connections and similarities for sure, but grave wave as a term is lame and does not capture the breadth and variety of the artists work included in this comp. Related – Mishka is getting into dangerous territory by trying to define themselves as taste makers/create musical genres/define subcultures to this degree. Guest mixes sure awesome, keep watch mixes have been great aside from the few dude-ed out ones. I don’t agree that music and fashion are NOT connected, but seriously, it’s a bit cocky this whole thing.

I’ve literally seen people I know who are just seriously like the lamest trend hoppers ever posting this, which I’m sorry, makes my skin crawl a little. Maybe that’s being a snob or a puritan about music, but I seriously take some of these artist very very seriously and respect them and what they do. Now I’m half afraid I’ll walk into an american apparel and hear xeno and oaklander.

Totally understand that you guys are all about exposing new music and stuff but this just smells a bit too funky.

  64. My Pal the Crook Says:

I think you’re way late on your fears on *gasp* Xeno & Oaklander being played at an American Apparel. Viva Radio is all that’s played at AA and Viva Radio had some pretty great programing.

  65. jesse Says:

why would one become dismayed upon hearing good music while frequenting a legging outlet such as the one mentioned?

i hope all of these artists get so played-out in the next few years that newer artists are forced to devise ways to tap directly into listeners’ psyche and speak only in code hidden within hijacked Beiber mp5s for faster distribution. “remember when ‘snakes’ dropped on the salem myspace and it was 3am and it creeped us out so we closed all the windows? shit sounds so tame in 2013.”

every time it crosses my mind to check back i return to find the most hilarious griping. thank u to all involved.

tl;dr i like everything but i hate that other people will eventually like it and its your fault, mishka. take back this package of over 2 hours of brand new content, i dun wannit anymore. smooches.

Hi, just wanted to thank you for this comp. I grabbed when you first put it up and have since acquired more music by many of the bands featured.

I sent a link to this page to a friend today and decided to read the comments. The whiners really crack me up. I’ve been a fan of dark music in its various forms, since the late 80s, when, at the age of 11 or 12, I was more or less simultaneously introduced to Bauhaus, Bathory, Coil, Skinny Puppy, and Swans. One thing I’ve learned in the intervening years is that nothing simultaneously pisses off the twee crowd, the hardcore crowd, the granola crowd, the frat crowd, and the bible-thumping crowd like anything with a a touch of the gothish or grand guignol.

As for people complaining that their favorite Frontline Assembly or Black Tape for a Blue Girl clone band deserves more attention than these bands- boo-frickin’-hoo! It’s the artists who are stretching their tentacles into new places who deserve a leg up. I could care less if “Grave Wave” becomes a new genre tag or not– the artists on this comp are so diverse that it will probably, at most, end up as a descriptor for a certain sensibility, a sensibility that this longtime dark music aficionado is gleefully watching as it pours over the underground like a cold fog. I saw Zola Jesus the other day, and it felt like we were at the nexus of something important. So realease the bats, I say! It’s about time.
