Choice Is Yours Vol. 127: Daydream Nation vs. OK Computer

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (1988)

Vs.

RadioheadOK Computer (1997)

The Game is simple… We consider these both essential releases. But what if only one could exist between the two, which would it be? What’s more important… personal relevance, cultural significance, or simply being the better album all other things aside? Choice is yours…

OK computer by far…for me that album was life changing. It carried a lot of emotion/meaning without being blatant or demanding an explanation (like most of radiohead’s work) and it peaked my interest in music production and sound design. It was one of first albums that I started picking apart and really hearing all the different layers of sounds. Brilliant expression of art not only per track but more importantly as an entire album.

    Sonic Youth all day.

O.K. Computer was fairly boring in my opinion. Britrock was at the height of its popularity and critics were raving. But despite their commercial success, Radiohead had completely redefined their sound and created an album that was considered by many to be their finest moment. Truly demonstrating their brilliance, both musically and lyrically.

Daydream Nation, however, changed the face of an entire genre inspired by hardcore punk and indie rock. This album is generally characterized by distorted guitars, contrasting song dynamics, and apathetic lyrics. But while the album may have been largely drug-related, the music is still crystal clear… and Love it or Hate it, the record is still considered to be a classic.

Where are you getting that Daydream Nation was largely drug related? While I’m sure the band probably experimented some in they weren’t the sort of band known for that. Hell I’m 99% certain (Think it was in Confusion is Next among other places) Thurston has said multiple times that outside of occasionally smoking pot he nor the band did much if any drugs.

  6. MattVanBuren Says:

Thurston has admitted to experimenting with LSD and Marijuana, but no longer takes any drugs, or smokes.

  7. Rapist Wit Says:

Im sorry but Radiohead wins, one of the last few mainstream bands to try something different. I grew in a small West Virginia town, so I didnt hear Sonic Youth until i was 15 back in 2005 and I think Sister is their best record.

  8. black pelican Says:

Definitely my favorite Radiohead album, but I gotta go with Daydream Nation

  9. painiac Says:

Daydream Nation. I could listen to that album every day. Can’t even conceive of doing that with OK Computer.

  10. 5tereo5ilence Says:

I’m not into a Radiohead music.
Sonic Youth definitely better. Daydream Nation is classic.
    My vote for ‘Daydream Nation’.

    Sonic Youth all day!

  11. Kingsnake Says:

Without Daydream Nation there wouldn’t be an OK Computer
