Choice Is Yours Vol. 132: The Human Centipede Vs. The House of the Devil
The Human Centipede (2010) Directed by Tom Six
Vs.
The House of the Devil (2009) Directed by Ti West
I have to admit I totally rushed this week’s CIY. I usually have these planned in advance, sometimes a few weeks worth but I just dropped the ball this week. I was planning on doing a Horror one but couldn’t quickly settle on two classics to pit against one another and this one kind of quickly sprung into my head.
Two great recent horror debuts that were written and directed by two promising guys in the world of horror. Both are homages/revivals of bygone eras in Horror cinema… Human Centipede of the Cronenberg’s Biological Horror of the 80s; while House of the Devil takes on the Supernatural 70s-80s. Plus both were IFC championed releases. So… What if only one could exist between the two, which would it be? Choice is yours…

my vote goes to Human Centipede. The first scene solidifies what type of film we can expect and it never fails to bring the same level of awkward humor. It’s definitely more subtle than the hype surrounding it purported, but that doesn’t detract from the viewing itself.
The House Of The Devil is composed of a well put together sense of eeriness and expectancy that instead turns to ridiculous nonsensical occult inaccuracies and lulz where it could easily have become (as appropriately set-up) a true nostalgic horror.

House of the Devil. Hands down.

This is tough, but I’ve rewatched Devil a lot and have only watched Centipede once. I feel it’s a richer film with great subtleties placed throughout. Imma go with Devil.

House of the Devil right away
The Human Centipede did a layup when everyone wanted a slam dunk

I thought The Human Centipede was a slam dunk and a much harder film to pull off than The House of the Devil considering it was billed as a “gross out” flick whose “gross outs” were entirely cerebral.
