Recap: Cold Cave & Austra Cherish the Light

Much like Cold Cave’s newest offering, Cherish the Light Years, their recent FYF-presented show last week in LA was one MASSIVE affair. Set on the stage of the only sometimes-used Ukrainian Cultural Events Center, the set will easily go down as one of the better bills I’ve seen all year.

Supported by a noise veteran with many hats (Hospital Productions honcho, Cold Cave’s keyboardist), Dominick Fernow played first as Prurient, with Cold Cave’s Wesley Eisold assisting. Having been absent from the live stage for quite a while, his return, marked with the new LP Burmuda Drain, saw the piercing, synthesized white clamors he builds let fly like a pack of wild wolves on some wounded and shocked prey. Standing front row in a capacity crowd, this was powerful shit indeed.

Next in line for Zola Jesus/Lykke Li fans, Canadian goth-spiked electronica act Austra delivered a set that seemed to come nowhere. Replacing the room’s tense delight of Prurient, the harmonic and classical theatrics of the female-led quintet certainly proved that all their Band-to-Watch acclaim might actually be worth something. Their debut, Feel it Break was released by Domino back in May.

Now down to a live troupe of just three, Cold Cave (keyboard, keyboard and drums) proved that member changes and some odd, seemingly out-of-nowhere fight to stay ‘relevant’ within their scene (one mentioned how Cold Cave shirts were “ugh, so 2k-10″) leaders delivered a set that offered a perfect exclamation at the end of the night’s fruitful mention. Wesley Eisold and Dominick Fernow have absolutely no trouble carrying this band as a trio nor any recreating Cherish’s marked move to bigger tunes that, more than ever before, possess that certain 80′s electronic swell of their arena-filling influencers.
