Review: Jacuzzi Boys – Glazin’
Jacuzzi Boys – Glazin’ (2011) [Hardly Art] // Grade: A-
It’s so good to see a band from my neck of the woods killing it these days. Let me think, the last thing to come out of South Florida with this much promise was a pack of wild jabronis called Surfer Blood and that was a good few years ago, now we’ve got sweaty, grimy, snotty garage rockers Jacuzzi Boys to get behind. Locale is one thing but I find it even easier to support these dudes because they don’t suck, actually they swell with vitality, breaking the lo-fi genre down to it’s principal properties and ripping while they’re at it.
Vocals burn through a vox in mildly distorted harmony while the guitar is picked methodically like a fuzzed-out metronome. The drums, which I like to think are metal trash cans turned upside down, are banged on creating lively rhythms that leave a tinny residue after each stroke. Making pop songs for the longhairs, Jacuzzi Boys have cannonballed on the scene with their new album Glazin’, making waves in a hot tub of booze and vomit.
The boys have put records out on labels Hozac, Mexican Summer, and even contributed music for the Bruise Cruise, a three-day rock n’ roll fuckfest on the high seas, record series. I’d say they’ve been keeping themselves pretty darn busy over the past four years, writing and recording as much as humanly possible. All those split 7″s have paid off cuz Glazin’ is a beach blanket bongout that commands our undivided inattention. From the lead-off “Vizcaya” to the party jam “Cool Vapors” to the very last, retro-acoustic sounding track “Koo Koo With You”, the album embodies everything that is summer.
Come mid-September, the band will be hittin’ the asphalt and kicking off a country-wide tour in honor of this release. Show up, get drunk, dance like a maniac, and puke all over the person in front of you. It’s all in good fun!
