Мишка Holiday ‘11: Graphic Sweatshirts n’ Hoodies, Goody Goody!

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Versatility is a virtue, and no clothing item is more multifunctional than the sweatshirt. Wear it, layer it, it takes all comers. Check out the ones from Holiday. First we have the Death Adders Varsity Zip Up Hoodie, a perfect pair with your Death Adders Beanie. If you want a real evil lookin’ hoodie then you’re in the market for the Up Your Ass Pullover, which features the Мишка-tallica logo and a certain green toilet monster than you guys have been flippin’ over. There’s also the Cyrillic Trails Pullover Hoodie, which takes Мишка past lightspeed.

For those of you who say “damn the hoods” don’t worry: we’re ready to go with crewnecks. Another one of my favorite designs, Road To Ruin, is available on Black or Heather crewneck. If you want both those colors in one place, then check out the Death’s Head Crewneck, featuring our Simon Skull ‘n Bones and some serious striping. For an extra color blast, peep the Oversized Halftone Mop Crewneck. It’s the one with the giant glowing bear head. Finally, there’s the Keep Watch Crest II Crewneck, a classic Мишка look to remind everyone you’re Engineered To Destroy!

Nicholas Forker, Astronauts, And Being Young Now

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a career. I never grew up. Yeah, I fuck off a lot, and do things that might be considered immature, but that stuff never stood in the way of growing up. The kind of growing up I’m talking about is more external. I was born in 1981, and spent most of my life believing that I was supposed to work hard, be ethical, look for a wife, and not break the law, and if I did those things I’d come out the other end able to abide my intentions and find fruition. I was never “normal” but I was also never that far into the fringe. While I enjoyed a lot of things that fell outside of the status quo, at the end of the day I still wanted succes in very regular terms, I just wanted that success via less conventional avenues. It never seemed outlandish.

I was lucky enough to land an almost free ride through undergraduate on Florida’s Bright Futures scholarship. Bright Futures just meant that I got good grades and high SAT scores in high school. When I finished my undergraduate education I was 24 with no debt, and the best thing I could think to do with myself was to go to graduate school and accumulate a larger than life heap of debt. As far as I could tell it wasn’t a problem because I was ready to be a professor until art or music really took off, and I was so passionate about learning. Looking back on it I was just way too caught up in trying to please my parents (if you don’t have Jewish parents you probably can’t understand, but I’m sure you can imagine), and I put too much faith in academia to be dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge above all else.

Anyways, by the time I got out of graduate school the country’s economy had gone from opulent to decimated. I spent 3 years applying to roughly 30 or so PhD programs in an attempt to avoid the job market and continue my education, but I got denied by all of the programs I applied to. 2007, the year that I graduated, was the beginning of some pretty serious upheaval in this country. The job market was bleak as fuck. And after working full time at various New York restaurants during my master’s degree I simply went into working full time plus at restaurants. I kept making music, as well as visual art, as well as writing, and desigining, and maintained that as long as I worked hard at what I was passionate about, and worked hard at a job at least 45 hours a week I’d get ahead. But, by the time 2010 rolled around nothing had happened. By my estimation I would sooner than later begin to slip backwards. I hit the wall. I had followed all the tenets, yet had found none of what I sought.

Now, I took all the time to say that because I think it’s relevant to what a lot of folks are going through. Every American is sold some sort of lie in America, but I feel like our generation was sold something en masse that simply dwarfs the notion of a lie. A lie is a pertinent detail that has been omitted or manipulated in one person/side’s interest in order to produce a desired result. A lie adds another layer of social mechanisms to a situation. It complicates an exchange. What we were subjected to did not complicate the exchange, and it did not add another layer to the situation that coming-of-age-young-folks were dealing with. When the wool was pulled from our eyes it was revealed that we were the sad saps left holding both the bill, and the shitty end of the stick for more than 20 years of reckless legislation privileging corporate interests over the lives and liberties of the citizens. For folks who tried to enter the workforce after the year 2005 it was an uphill battle. And because of the way our wage, taxation, and banking systems are set up, if you had debt before 2005 it’s likely that your situation hasn’t improved much.

That’s a very long way of setting up the opportunity to say that’s what I see in Nicholas Forker’s art, but I don’t know how else to do it. He renders meticulous, and incredibly compelling depictions of astronauts. But, being that he’s an artist, and not just a draftsman—as his uncles, and grandfather are—his astronauts don’t just float through space in stunning life-like depictions. Nicholas’s astronauts live life like you and me. And that’s just an inverted way of showing that like his astronauts, we are surviving in a way that is profoundly detached from our surrounding, while a hostile environment around us remains cold and vacuous. And this is all in spite of the fact that we can see other folks existing without the need for such complex apparatuses of survival. It’s a rough world, and it’s not easy to survive out there. But, there’s a silver lining here too. For Nicholas, and a lot of other folks I’ve been talking to lately, the tides seem to be changing. Finally. And given the political climate, and the context that is our nation, it would seem that the change that’s happening for individuals is the indication of a larger systemic change rolling out.

2012 is gonna be a good year if you’ve worked hard to get it. And if you’re in New York for it, swing by Nicholas’s first solo show next year at Mallick Williams. If you can’t wait that long check him at Scope Art Fair down in Miami in a few weeks, or stop by the Rag and Bone wall on Houston Street where Nicholas is curating. We’re all floating in space, but it feels like we’re colonizing here. I’m excited to see how we’ll survive in this new world, but however it goes Nicholas certainly puts an interesting spin on taking it all in.

Мишка Holiday ‘11: Snapbacks 2 Reality

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Not gonna lie, I gotta sort of weirdly sized head. Not proud of it, it’s just how it is. So fitted hats are not really my game. I can never find the right size. Which is why, at a young age, I came to understand the majesty of the snapback hat. The options, the old-school baseballness of ‘em, the sound of opening the snaps. I love it! So it’s quite a boon for me that Mishka is so committed to consistently dropping ill snapbacks (did you see our new Corduroy Keep Watch?) and Holiday 2011 is no different.

We got four new designs and each one comes in two different colorways. Choices! There’s the Destroy M, if you’re into the whole simplicity thing (and perfect for matching with the Destroyer M Cardigan). Then we got the ETD! Snapback, my personal fave, with a Death Adder on the side and a dope red/black colorway. If you’re feeling sporty you can even support your favorite fictional football game with the Scum Bowl Starter. Last but not least, there’s the Cyrillic Pro Starter, a classic look with Keep Watch logos and super swag colors. Is this what hat heaven is like??

The #SEAPUNK Wave Rolls ON and On and On…

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Since my last write up, which showcased the burgeoning lifestyle movement known as #seapunk to the world, there have been a few significant updates with Coral Records (the DIY label started specifically to release artists within the #seapunk multiverse), mostly being that there is just a steady stream of good music being released, and the fact that #seapunk is turning into something of a dangerous, real life phenomenon.

All jokes aside, there does seem to be something about #seapunk that is resonating within the global consciousness, as its music and aquatic messages of optimism are reaching hearts and minds all over the world. I was even asked by Mishka to write more about #seapunk here on the bloglin because the last post about #seapunk was so popular! With that being said, let’s get to what actually matters: the music.

Coral Records just released the Soaked EP (Splash003), which is a split between two Kansas City producers, API and Papoose. On sort of a tranced out cyber-juke robo-trip tip, this release is completely next level and a real game changer. API and Papoose come out of the same rural dance music scene as producers like Huerco S. and Indigo Bunting, who were both featured on the now classic Seapunk Volume 1 compilation.

Upcoming releases include Splash004, which will be a Split between Indigo Bunting and JAM. JAM, along with Fire For Effect, co-produced the brilliant new SSION record, “Bent.” Splash005 will be a release by Curtis Vodka doing some real heavy drum-n-bass and jungle vibes. In the meantime grab a really rad mix by Curtis Vodka HERE. So KEEP WATCH for more #seapunk updates and dont forget to pick up a Coral Records t-shirt and oversize pin to show your #seapunk support!

And just for fun, here’s a free download of my  ”Post Physical (Fire For Effect’s Post Grave Remix)“. I am biased of course, but it is amazing.

Press Start!: Homoerotic Rimjobs, Lightsabers and Christmas Moms

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Hello, friends. How you doing? Are you stuffed to the brim with Thanksgiving food? Is your bowel movement the consistency of corn-flavored soft serve ice cream? Then kick your feet up and read this edition of Press Start!, the column where I mouth off about the events in the previous week of gaming. It’s a list!

You like lists. Santa likes lists. Everyone is partying in lists. Unbutton them pants, let the stink of your overworked groin-parts lull you into a state of semi-consciousness, and open your gaming Third Eye to me.

#1: Fake Christian Site Trolls Skyrim, Gets People Riled Up
In a world where immature gaming columnists reference stool movements and PETA does at least absurd thing a week, it’s sometimes difficult to discern who is fucking crazy, and who is fucking around. This week the faux-Christian Banana Cakes website ChristWire dropped an article proclaiming that Skyrim was turning all the gentle children of the Erf into quite the gays. My initial reaction was similar to most peoples, a laugh at the absurdity of these close-minded fear-mongering Wingnuts. Joke was on my ass! They were absurd, but it’s all part of a very Onion-esque site. I got rolled! Alas. The article itself was pretty fucking magical right off the bat when I thought it was legit, and its wunder continues on through knowing its a satire.

On a more serious note, if Skyrim can teach me how to perfect the ancient art of Rimming the Jobs, then it’s yet another reason I need to play the game. Much like Othello, it seems an easy move to learn. Yet a lifetime to master.

#2: EB Games/GameStop Removes Used Gaming Section, Mixes All Titles Together
In a move of ripping doucheosity, EB Games/GameStop has removed their used gaming section. Now all those titles that mongoloids like myself have breathed on and touched with sticky seminal fluid fingers are out in the wild. Floating around with the pristine copies that you’re hoping to get your fingers on. It’s a genius corporo-diabolical move, getting you to pay close to fucking total title value for something that’s already been bought and sold. #OccupyGameStop?

I got shoveled a used copy of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood this year, and my caffeine-soaked brain piece didn’t even realize it until I got home. It didn’t bother me that much outside of the principal. That is, they didn’t fucking ask, and I wasn’t planning on buying a used copy. I imagine this all becomes even trickier with Online Gaming Passes and free DLC that you get when you snag the title for free.

Pigs!

All the Sexy Ladies of Stagg Street

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Have you looked at Stagg Street recently?  If not, here are a couple of the hot naked ladies you’re missing. Check out Eden from Berlin in an all black classic pin-up style. If one girl isn’t enough, then how about Heather Vandeven and Justine Joli getting intimate in an outdoor shower?

I know you’ll like Apathy Angel with a large metal shop door, or maybe you’re more inclined to the voluptuous Mandy Morbid in a simple white dress and posing behind a screen. Last but not least, Nyssa Nevers and Kendra James making out on this old lawn couch. Enjoy, and be sure to stop by Stagg Street!

Мишка Holiday ‘11: Button Up For Winter!

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Mawson Chambray Shirt

Adams Poplin Shirt

Post-War Utility Shirt

Marshall Flannel Shirt

Edgeworth Poplin Shirt

ETD! Poplin Shirt

Shackelton Flannel Shirt

When I was a kid my Mom would always make me wear this button-up white shirt and starchy khakis when we went out to dinner with my Grandparents. I remember being very confused about this thing with cuffs and collars and plackets (though I had no idea what any of that meant) and why exactly it was better than my beloved t-shirts. Then in 7th grade I got into grunge and I got my first flannel shirt. I wore that raggedy thing like it was part of me, and I finally realized: my Mom was right yo. Button-ups kick ass.

Because we know you can’t just wear tee’s all the time, we are ready, as usual, to provide you with a brand new stock of shirts this Holiday. We have two new flannel styles, the Marshall and the Shackleton, and these rugged mofos are ready to explore winter with you as well as their namesakes did. If you’re feeling the plaid but want to be able to layer that sucker without puttin’ yourself in a sweat box, I would suggest either the Adams or Edgeworth poplin shirt’s. Both winners with unique colorways, and if you feel extra snazzy the Edgeworth has got chambray elbow patches to boot.

Some of you prolly want to step out the box a bit, say goodbye to your comfort zone perhaps. In that case we have the ETD! Poplin shirt and the Mawson Chambray. The ETD! comes with three front pockets, one in a contrast color that matches patchwork color blocks on the shoulders and front. It’s also got a corduroy collar. It’s the little things, amirite? The Mawson, which comes in three colors (including my fave. Salmon, whatup!), has that chambray look you know and love with creative color blocks on the chest and an inverted front pocket.

Finally, if you’re feeling in a militant way, then we have just the thing for you. The Post War Utility Shirt is our rough ‘n tumble answer to the ravages of winter. Coming exclusively in a classic camo, this three pocket number with denim accents is my standout pick for this year’s shirt collection. Needless to say there’s something for everyone this year, so button-up and get out there you beautiful bastards.

Chelsea Wolfe Is Live & Kicking. And Pale.

Friday, November 25th, 2011

In case you didn’t see the review on Monday, we were very, very fond of Chelsea Wolfe‘s new LP Apokalypsis, which is out now on Pendu. Check out this video of her performing two standout tracks from the album, “Tracks (Tall Bodies)” and “Pale On Pale” in the Swan7 Studio for Brooklyn’s Newtown Radio.

The ghostly Ms. Wolfe and her band sure know how to create a gloomy wall of sound that can contend with the best of them. Perhaps most impressive though is her voice’s ability to spar with such an aggressive backing track. I’m gonna go listen to Apokalypsis s’more.
