Pizza Power: Someone Finally Gets a Kill With Power Tattoo!!!

Friday, November 25th, 2011

I love the Kill With Power face. He’s my favorite of our icons. How can you not love his sinister yet lovable grin? You know that whatever you slap that face onto it’ll be up to no good and having a blast doing it.

KWP is also like the “Butters” of our cast of characters. Criminally unappreciated! But clearly Jersey’s Christopher Gareffa does indeed appreciate the malevolent bliss that is Kill With Power, or he wouldn’t have gotten him permanently etched into his body. Chris opted for a version of KWP from our old Holiday 20o8 Exotica collection, but gave it his own cheese and sauce filled twist by making the KWP triangular body a slice of pizza. Mmm mmmmm!

Мишка Holiday ‘11: Get Toasty w/ These Jackets!

Friday, November 25th, 2011

What clothing purchase is more exciting than that of a new jacket? Sure, it may cost more than the pieces you’re normally buying, but there’s never anything but a sense that you are getting your money’s worth. It appeals to one of our baser instincts. It will get cold, and yet we must stay warm. The simple fact that you can bring your style to the next level while doing it is a delectable icing on the satisfaction cake.

This year we’ve got a collection of jackets that ethers the competition. If you’re in the northeast, where the nights get bitter and any color is allowed as long as it’s black, then the Forcefield Toggle Coat is for you. All black with leather accents, sherpa lining and a prodigious hood, the Forcefield is a piece you can buy and cherish for years. Or maybe you’re more a Predator Utility Jacket kinda guy. Active. Utilitarian. Enamored with pockets. This canvas shelled beauty is for you. Then there’s my personal favorite, the Sniper Bomber. Classic bomber cut with a classic camo print, and a black sherpa lining to boot! Shove your hands in those front pockets and hunker down against the winter while looking like a boss. Jacket weather. Music to my ears.

Review: Dream Boat – Widow

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Dream BoatWidow (2011) [AMDISCS] // Grade: A-

Dream Boat really is a dream. Despite the witch-house vibe of them, the dark associations, all haze and terror, the Rhode Islander(s) lope around such an ethereal soundscape, it’s always been tough to distinguish light from dark. Second full-length Widow amps up the dreaminess even more, with tracks that embody all the wavy unreality of sub-conscious thought — except this time, the sometimes-nightmare is balanced by even smaller, more subtle moments.

Of course, that balance isn’t entirely new. The subtle to overblown trade-off was a definite cornerstone of last year’s Visions, but where it felt less distinctive there — even the most minimal moments still had that hiss about it — it becomes unmissable on Widow. Tracks like the clicking, stuttering “Poppies” and washed out “S Uma” lean into the granular static of “Keepaway”, forever pitting watery atmosphere against bright, crushing dance. The electronic misadventure of it seems to breathe of its own accord, shuffling bleary eyed through different worlds; fantasy and reality enmeshed into this alternate sphere.

And it’s also very much the sound of a project developing. Rather than work within the exact same parameters — or, conversely, switch everything up to a dizzying degree — Dream Boat seem intent on pushing their concepts to the limit of mastery. Widow is better produced, better paced, better conceptualized than its already great predecessor. And, if we’re lucky, Dream Boat’s only just getting started.

Review: Andy Stott – We Stay Together

Friday, November 25th, 2011

Andy StottWe Stay Together (2011) [Modern Love] // Grade: A

Andy Stott created a sort of collective shell-shock with Passed Me By. The EP hit hard and sudden: A collection of heavily drugged club tracks that both captivated and confounded those who’d followed the producer’s twists on dub-techno over the years. The new, primordial direction wasn’t entirely without precedent — Stott had been flirting with similar ideas in very minute fits and starts — but it was enough to snap a few heads upright.

Now, just six months later, he’s back with another take on the lurching, humid sound. We Stay Together is something of a companion piece to Passed Me By, but it’s not just a too-soon rehash; Stott’s coming at us with an even tougher ferocity here, counterbalancing the oozing ambience with hotter, more visceral beats. From the opening hiss and scratch of “Submission” to the sultry counter-rhythms of “Poser” and the warm, muffled filter of “Cherry Eye”, We Stay Together is congealed by a penetrating darkness, this heat-soaked terror, all drugged and luscious. It’s like heroin, tugging at your focus. Blurry, then not. Think Burial on the Equator.

And maybe it’s all an experiment. Andy Stott could move right past this deep, treacherous excursion into something more glittering and frantic, more reminiscent of the sound he’d honed before. But experiment or no, this excursion is essential. The one-two punch of Passed Me By and We Stay Together, the insular and terrifying world of them? Not to be missed.

It’s a Rich Man’s World: #Occupy the Streets of Hell!

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

When this whole #ows movement happened, the first thing that popped into my mind was definitely ABBA. I mean, who didn’t immediately think of Anna, Björn, Benny, and Frida, and what they would say in this time of economic and social turmoil. Luckily, Mater Suspiria Vision stepped up to the plate and answered that question.

Here’s a video for MSV’s “Money Money Money (Occupy Wall Street Reconstruction),” a timely and upbeat flip on the classic ABBA track. Did I say upbeat? Why, I meant the diametric opposite of that! Be inspired! The revolution will be televised on Vimeo!
