Get Lost in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom

Hey look, a new live action Wes Anderson movie. It’s a thing. That exists now. How are we supposed to feel about Wes Anderson again? Pretentious longhair or quirky genius? I feel like it switches a lot. Bottle Rocket. Good movie. This looks like it shouldn’t change anyone’s mind, for better or worse, about the iconic director. Moonrise Kingdom is the story of young love at a summer camp, and kids running away and stuff.

It looks like it’s back to the extremely manicured surrealism of The Life Aquatic after a return to relative normalcy with Darjeeling Limited (Mr. Fox is sort of a side note. Not in quality just… y’know). It looks… good maybe? I like all of the actors, and I’m sure it’ll be gorgeous, and I actually like the story too. This looks like it could be pushing the strangeness just one notch too far though. Am I just being weird?

Nobody in real life talks with the same stiffness that the characters in Wes Andy movies do.

It started in Tenenbaums and has gotten worse with each movie. That’s what I’ve found most distracting in his movies and this one looks to be the worst offender. Bummer.
