James Murphy, Shut Up and Play the Trailer

I didn’t throw on the monochromatic outfits and go melt my eyes/ears off last year at MSG for LCD Soundsystem’s last show, but I guess I understood why it was a big deal. I always thought LCD Soundsystem was a great band, and that James Murphy’s DFA was a milestone label for our times, but I still thought it was strange how their apotheosis was rapidly accelerated by the announcement that This Is Happening would be their last record, and the ensuing MSG shenanigans.

All in all, it was a pretty bizarre move. They were only three records deep (and didn’t seem at all on the verge of creative exhaustion), there seemed to be no tension in the “band” (mainly because its just the one guy), Murphy wasn’t removing himself from the public eye (check out the GQ article about him, Aziz Ansari, and David Chang going to Tokyo), and no one appeared to have personal issues. Big Star they were not. And yet, they cut themselves off. So, always more interesting to me than the show itself was the reasoning behind it. So, hopefully, there’ll be some insight in Shut Up and Play the Hits, the new doc about the end of LCD that will premiere at Sundance. First trailer is above.
