Review: SpaceGhostPurrp – God of Black EP Vol. 1
SpaceGhostPurrp – God of Black EP Vol. 1 (2012) [Self-Released] // Grade: B+
When SpaceGhostPurrp released “Suck A Nigga Dick for 2012” from God of Black EP Vol. 1, I was a lil concerned. Could an update of the now classic “Suck a Nigga Dick for 2011” be as powerful as the preeminent fellatio related anthem of last year? Did we even need a new version of “Suck a Nigga Dick”? Had things really changed that much in the dick sucking game or was this just modernity for modernity’s sake? But, then I heard “Suck a Nigga Dick for 2012” in the context of God of Black and it became clear that the update was actually, entirely necessary.
The 2012 version of “Suck a Nigga Dick” was much more moody, lethargic and smoother. In a weird way, it borders on some kind of futuristic descendant of R. Kelly’s vulgar R&B and the Ying Yang Twins “intimate club music” movement. If “SANDF2011” was drunken, lustful head in the bathroom of a dive bar on a Friday night, “SANDF2012” was languid Sunday afternoon head. Somehow, Purrp had managed to craft an entirely different feeling song in the very narrowly defined genre of songs about sucking dicks. Strangely, this is the point where I realized that SpaceGhostPurrp will be around for awhile and we may all be rocking “Suck a Nigga Dick For 2060” in retirement homes while telling our grandkids “they don’t make songs like this anymore….”
God of Black follows suit with last year’s Blvcklvnd Rvdix 66.6, finding Purrp serving as lord of his own pocket universe where the three suns of Three 6 Mafia evil rap, mystical soundscapes and 90s styled delivery shine a beautiful black light. Where God of Black differs is in its cohesion. The world of Blvcklvnd 66.6 was a hectic one, jumping from the evil bounce of “Possessed” to the draped up and haze of “Mac Named Purrp.” On God of Black, Purrp manages to synthesize all of his influences into a sustained ten (or eleven, depending on which DatPiff link you click) track experience that feels distinctly evil and spaced out.
“Mystical Maze” is so dark and moody it should really come with it’s own set of arcane glyphs that encapsulate misanthropy in its whole. “Elevate” catches Purrp doing his version of Lil B’s self help through musical incantation. The repeated chant of the chorus is the type of shit that could get motivate you to better yourself and the community around you. “Money Power Respect Free B.G” is ultimately about stealing someone’s chick and fucking her with Penthouse Forum levels of expertise. What’s amazing is that despite their disparate subject matter they all sound as though they could be played during a Masonic initiation ritual of some sort where Purrp is leading the proceedings in a velvety black robe.
A new addition for this record is the inclusion of the rest of the Raider Klan on a couple of tracks. Usually the inclusion of extended crew members on a rapper’s album means we’re at the point of diminishing returns on quality (notable exception Dipset) but the couple of appearance by Amber London, Metro Zu and Raven actually serve to flesh out Purrp’s universe of dark mystical rap. With this release under his belt Purrp has shown that not only is his brand of rap sustainable over multiple releases, but he’s actually growing as an artist. Can’t wait to hear how “Suck a Nigga Dick For 2013” flips the script on fellatio funk.
