In the video for Robb Bank$’ “Counting” dude introduces us to his world of getting fucked up, chilling on the block, playing Pokemon cards for money and fucking with chicks. It appears to be an everyman rap joint in the tradition of Ice Cube’s “It Was A Good Day” with a lil extra swagu (fuck you Kanye) poured on top. Although, now that I think about it, Cube was rolling C-low in lieu of battling Charizards. But, much like Ice Cube’s joint there’s way heavier shit going on in this song than a laundry list of “activities to undertake while you’re visiting the hood”.

“Counting” works as Bank$ letting loose and not giving a fuck in the face of impending death. It’s a rap version of the classic “what would you do if you had a year left to live” scenario. It’s unclear if dude is counting down his own death in a Sylvia Plath “we’re all dying slowly” way or if homeboy is one some Mayan apocalypse shit, but either way it’s kinda weighty. With a Clams Casino beat that sounds like the tortured screams of ghosts that drive psychics crazy, Bank$ manages to make a song that’s both swagged out and grim as fuck. It’s essentially the aural equivalent of the Immortal Mouse Actual Pain shirt dude is rocking.
