Alpha Couple Can Sing Like Mariah
I recently reviewed Alpha Couple‘s “Covers” release and was rather impressed with their reckless sonic abandon and exploratory adventurous journey in tweenoise. Today marks the release of their new stop motion datamosh style (5 frames per second) video to accompany the track “Mariah.” “Mariah” like the rest of the album are not actual covers in the traditional sense. They are more encapsulated projections of memories, glimpses into faded Poloroids.
Kristel Jax of Alpha Couple said when asked about the track:
“Mariah’ is Mark’s cover of a song he heard over and over as a kid, Mariah Carey’s take on ‘Without You’… but he never actually says ‘I can’t live if living is without you,’ he’s just saying he can’t give anymore. Which again is something that just started happening through live shows and what felt right.”
Means definitely justify the end and this wonderful video and soundscape of a track pocked with radio bits, guitar, vocals and endless open space are quite a brilliant example of how far a cover can be taken. In the name of experimentation and sonic convolution, cheers.
