Upstream Color And Sound
Primer is one of the most confusing time travel movies ever put to digital video. I’ve seen the damn thing three or four times and still can’t exactly figure out what the hell happened. There’s a spoiler filled website that explains everything that happens in the movie; it’d be a cool twenty pages if you printed it out. Test your intelligence/patience by watching it on Netflix now.
After writer/director/star Shane Carruth dropped Primer in 2004 he laid real low. He reportedly helped out Rian Johnson with the time travel logic in this summer’s Looper. But, otherwise dude’s been locked away working on his follow up movie Upstream Color. It’s billed as a experimental romantic drama that features mind control slugs and psychic bonding with pigs. No one can acuse him of selling out, ever.
While the movie is still a couple of months away from being released—in presumably small distribution—the entire score is available on Soundcloud. It’s an ethereal piece that’s great to work to and unlike Carruth’s movies is fairly standard fare. Of course Carruth wrote the score as well as the movie, because really when you’re working on your epic romance about mind control slugs you can’t just call up John Legend to do a song for the soundtrack.
