The weird white woman singularity is here, and her name is Boyfriend. This is where the line between Lena Dunham, a younger Chloe Sevingy and the likes of Lil Debbie blurs. Boyfriend is a rapper based in Los Angeles who sports tortoise-shell, horn-rimmed glasses; thrift store outfits, and seems like your typical hipster; but really Boyfriend aims to promote sexuality and eroticism. Geek in the streets, freak in the sheets…with some rapping sprinkled on top.
Her newest video, “Swanky” features some Salvation Army exclusive costumes and verses that drop references to Gone With The Wind, Million Dollar Baby, and the Clintons, because ladies with horn-rimmed glasses reference things like Gone With The Wind. What’s unexpected is the very wavy beat that sounds a lil like a Clams Casino beat sculpted from a Luscious Jackson song or maybe a Purity Ring song, if they cheered up a bit. The existence of Boyfriend sort of proves that Kitty Pryde is the Eminem of rapping white women, who don’t look like strippers. Most likely not a song that’ll be burning up the charts, but if you know a sex positive, all natural foods, social justice loving feminist that’s in the market for rap music that doesn’t bolster the patriarchy; this is her summer jam. Countdown til this song finds it way into an episode of Girls begins, now.
