For fans of the “aliens blowing shit up” genre of cinema, a sequel to Independence Day has been long overdue. The movie has become a basic cable cult classic, for being equally rewatchable and over the top (aliens are defeated by a computer virus delivered via a blue light special Walmart laptop, the president flies a fighter jet against an alien mothership). But, the real sell of Independence Day was always Will Smith, being Will Smith. Without Will Smith playing Fresh Prince of the Alien Defense Force, the movie is about Jeff Goldblum being really nervous and talking a lot while hacking. No one is watching that shit.
Unfortunately, word on the street is Independence Day 2 is preparing to film and Will Smith’s presence is uncertain. In a recent interview, director Ronald Emmerich, revealed two scripts have been created; one with Will and one without him. This is a horrible idea. Though Emmerich is staying positive that Smith will be a part of the film, it’s a bit obvious that he’s shitting bricks over this. When a director can’t lockdown the star of a blockbuster for its sequel, twenty years later, chances are we won’t be getting a quality flick.
Looking forward to Bad Boys 3 starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill; and I Am Legend 2 starring hologram Bernie Mack.- Jasmina Cuevas
