Meet Houston Texas based rapper and designer Mike Lewwdaplug (Trap $en$ei). Mike is a founding member of Okaybett, a group which combines music and unique fashion to make them standout online and offline by selling the clothing brand, hosting shows/parties and performing at college campuses around the Houston area. I recently spoke with Mike to elaborate more on his sound of music, clothing and how the Okaybett movement all started.
Robbie: So first off, when did you start designing and doing music?
Mike: I’ve been in the field since high school. Whatever I dropped the people copped. I was about 16, or 17 when I got my first break with a group of friends. It taught me to also be innovative and to express myself, man, and that’s what I’m trying to do every day.
Robbie: Who or what was some of your biggest inspirations to start designing your own clothing and doing music?
Mike: This is one of many of my callings, my friend. And just staying positive and all the people that really want to see me succeed and love me. I definitely do what I do for them. I have a lot of people that really love my music, man, and it’s a blessing to have the support that I do. To get all the love from them, is just amazing and it keeps me pumped day by day.
Robbie: How did Okaybett come together?
Mike: We were close friends that grew up together, made everything cool from music, to clothing even down to our lingo. We made art out of everything. I was about 16 or 17. Our first break through was the Okaybett song. That became a global thing. Who would of thought that a word, or slogan could change music, it brought everyone together you know what I’m saying? We started a movement and a new way to think about life and what music can represent. But we were young and didn’t realize it at the time.
Robbie: How did the name Trap $EN$EI come about?
Mike: Trap $EN$EI is my teacher and my mentor. He has a lot of wisdom. You can learn a lot from his music. Mike-Leww is the PLUG, the Trap $EN$EI is perfect and Mike-Leww is the trendsetter, the person that everyone follows and pays attention to… The Trap $EN$EI is amazing, man he is a philosopher but we’re one. I’m just happy I got the chance to meet the Trap $EN$EI in person.
Robbie: If you had to label your sound what would it be?
Mike: Music for the soul. See, you might have noticed something, my music is universal, and has galaxies within it.
Robbie: What was your goal with the recent Positive Drugs EP? What was the response like for you afterwards?
Mike: Positive Drug$ is no doubt a classic -it will go down in the books bruh mark my words. Open Minds Only up next LOOK OUT.
Robbie: Now it’s 2014, what are your plans with Okaybett? (Are there any upcoming shows?)
Mike: I’m no longer with “Okaybett public”, I’m focused on my own stuff right now -but hey we’re all in this together. The Opened Mind Tribe and me are getting prepared for this summer tour, man, I can’t wait for the wave.
