Less than a month ago, Ben Hixon dropped 1ntroductions, a seven track project that clocks in at under thirteen minutes. The quick tracks provide (seemingly) live instrumentation over distorted UGK, Gucci Mane, and Lil’ Wayne numbers. Jazzy keys, a groovy guitar, and some drums over Bun B letting you know that he won’t stop. For example.
Lil’ Wayne and Gucci Mane together on “We Be Steady Mobbin’” is so great. Spacey instrumentation, crackling production level that Dilla would have loved. T.I. on “Front Back” stops by to groove along. The production style on 1ntroductions is reminiscent of Clutchy Hopkins. Shawn Lee, maybe. Certainly within its own interesting realm, straying so far from the southern hip-hop tracks it samples that it becomes its own genre.
Very little is known about Ben Hixon. According to his Twitter, he came to Chicago from Texas. I assume he plays all types of instruments, as displaying on his introductory projects. He likes to distort his track titles into cryptic obscurities like “thRee kinGz – UgK (bix_ksh]),” which, as it happens, is the strongest track on the project. Maybe because “Three Kings” is my shit to begin with. Slim Thug’s voice is made even deeper. A soothing guitar grooves along while a drum machine pitter patters its way through the syrupy atmospheric madness. “Slim Thug ’bout to clown, represent H-Town. If you love me, you gon’ smile. If you hate me, you gon’ frown.”
At the end of the project, Hixon strays away from the South and snags the vocals from a Vic Mensa track, turning up the electronic toys and transitioning your brain back into a world you might already be familiar with. From crackling Clutchy comparisons to retrograde Ratatat remixes. It’s hard to say much else about a twelve minute music piece. Experimental hip-hop that drug dabblers can get behind. Listen closely. More to come, I’m sure. Hopefully Ben Hixon will get extra experimental and form an alter ego, changing his name to Hen Bixon. I’ve said too much.
The money is the motive. Fuck with the money, it get ugly as coyote.
