Store Spotting: Gimme More of Gina Turner and Bart B More!

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

We can never have enough of Gina Turner and apparently she can’t have enough of us! Which is totally fine by us. We’re always happy to see her come in during her “days off.” Gina has been busy promoting her recent releases with Laidback Luke, under the alias Nouveau Yorican, or just spreading the magenta gospel to fellow DJ Bart B More (seen with her).

They were both in town as part of the ongoing series of Scion tours and had some downtime. And what better way is there to pass an afternoon in New York than by shopping?

Take a listen to Nouveau Yorican’s “Boriqua” and feel those good vibes wash over you. Try and contain yourself from dancing at your desk though. We wouldn’t to spill coffee all over your laptop and then get pissy at the Bloglin.

Bart B More by the way will be playing one of our supported events next month as he opening up for Congorock and Benassi at Governor’s Island on July 5th for Benassi’s Pacha residency. If you like to dance and we hope you do, don’t miss it!

Store Spotting: It’s Andy Milonakis Bitches!

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The one & (truly) only Andy Milonakis came by the LA store the other day for some handouts with our Guiness Book New Era & to pick up some more Мишка gear to add to his collection.

I’d also like to  mention that I  recently saw Mr. Milonakis’ closet with my very own eyes and I’m actually convinced that he has more merch than our store does. Granted, our store is not the biggest location on the planet, but still.

So in-between “sleepy freestyles,” “crackhead verses” and spitting with Snoop & Redman, Andy found some time to stroll on down to Echo Park to let his brain chill from all the material he’s been conjuring up for what we hope to be his inevitable full-length album.

But honestly, more homegrown freestyles & bedroom verses will suffice. Especially rap disses like this one below.

Take that Justin Beiber!

Store Spotting: Martin Starr is “Magnicifent!”

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

About a week back we got ourselves a real treat, Martin Starr dropped by 350 Broadway to say Hello. Greg and I had met and spent an evening with Martin a few years back while in San Diego. Since he was in town and just an all around awesome guy, Martin decided to pop in the shop and say hello.

If you don’t know who Martin Starr is, well shame on you… How could you not know and love Bill Haverchuck? You’ve really never seen Freaks and Geeks? Then please stop reading this, go to Amazon and buy the complete (and only) season of one of greatest shows ever on broadcast television.

Martin dropped by the shop with a friend, Matt Bush, who I recognized but couldn’t put my finger on from where… well not until way later that night. If that guy on the right looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you’ve seen him countless times as the “Son” in AT&T’s long running FamilyTalk rollover minute commercial series. Well that and he was also in Adventureland along with Martin Starr.

Since Freaks & Geeks went off the air, Martin’s had supporting roles in loads of Judd Apatow films and as already mentioned, was in the pretty fantastic Adventureland last Summer. Currently he’s one of the stars in an ensemble cast in what’s is easily the funniest sitcom, since Curb Your EnthusiasmParty Down. This shit’s all over Arrested Development when it comes to being smart and funny! ALL OVER I say! And this is from someone who liked AD.

Martin plays Roman DeBeers, who when he’s not working for the Party Down Catering Co. is busy writing some terrible “Hard Sci-Fi” screenplays.

Party Down is currently in it’s second season (Oh Mars has even started doing Re-Ups on each episode). I’m going to be so miserable if Party Down gets taken off the air! If you aren’t watching it, seriously start. It airs on Friday at 10pm on Starz, or if you have Netflix, they stream each new episode to Watch Instantly the following day. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s the funniest thing you’ll see on TV. It’s simply “Magnicifent!” And if you watched you’d know what that meant!

Store Spotting: Drew Best, The SMOG Over LA!

Friday, June 4th, 2010

The buzz around Мишка LA has been growing by the day and a few days back, the head honcho of SMOG LA came through for a quick visit. Not only is Drew Best one of the raddest people in LA, but his company & record label SMOG have been blazing trails since 2006 and if a preacher was in the house, 2010 would be his witness.

From their Dubtroit events in Costa Mesa & a sickly talented roster of artists to a new partnership with Scion & now the Мишка sponsored SMOG Sessions monthly event in Echo Park, Мишка is proud to call the SMOG family our friends & partner in crime. Look out for the latest SMOG x Scion Sampler and a number of new releases from the entire SMOG crew.

I have to give a big shout out to the one-and-only Kemst of the SMOG crew, an old friend with whom nearly 9 years have passed since our paths crossed. Big up my friend! And if you live in Los Angeles or just passing through, every second Tuesday of the month is the Мишка sponsored party SMOG Sessions at The Echo, a messily half mile from the Мишка LA store! Hell there’s one this very Tuesday with Headhunter, Pinch, DLX and of course Kemst.

More on our in-store events for the SMOG Session party later, but be prepared for some music, beer, good people & Мишка gear!

Store Spotting: Straight From the (Blessure) Grave!

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Well actually their not from any grave, they’re from San Diego. And you know what? Their name really has nothing to do with graves, zombies or cemeteries even though they play some of the best and most brooding death rock around. Blessure Grave actually translates to mortal wound in French and that’s just as fitting for the band whose lyrics are full of wounded hearts, minds and souls!

Before performing at their first ever New York City show last night, Toby, Nicholas and Giovanni from Blessure Grave the stopped by 350 Broadway to say hello, hang out a bit and get a few things. I know Toby walked out with a green playhouse painter cap he had his eye on!

It was a pretty amazing show with a great crowd and even greater friends. Every single band putting on a fantastic performance! Blesure Grave were absolutely unconscious and all I can say is that if you’re a fan of them recorded you really need to see them live. Their records only scratch the surface of capturing just how powerful they are in concert.

If you guys missed last nights show but want to catch Blessure Grave, you’re in luck! Toby, Reyna and Crew will be performing at Bruar Falls in Williamsburg tonight with Passions again and Led Er Est. This will be Blessure Grave’s last east coast appearance for some time before they head back west for a string of appearances all up and down the coast.

Brooklyn Vegan is even running a little contest for free tickets for tonight! All you need to do is email bvcontests@hotmail.com with Blessure Grave in the subject line for your chance to win. Include your first and last name in the body of the email and all winners will be contacted if they’ve been selected.

Store Spotting: Sterling Bartlett Will Gank Ya!

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Capping off an amazing week at the L.A shop, we were visited by Sterling Bartlett, an L.A based artist & illustrator who’s been trailblazing his way in the art world for a while now and, a well-respected fan of the Мишка brand.

Sterling isnotonly an amazingly humble & easy-going person, but he has done some really incredible work under his belt for some heavy hitters. This heavy metal/vintage inspired artisan has worked with Globe Shoes, KR3W & Supra to name a few. He is also part of  a rad collective of artists who help bring the Blood is The New Black t-shirt line to life.

Sterling and I had a good conversation about art, the LA scene and of course some of the things he’s got up his sleeve for later this year. Sterling’s triple threat influence of booze n’ death n’ shit makes for some heavy work that fit right into sinister little world and we can’t get enough of his work. So if your sleepin’ on dude, wake the fuck up!

Maybe we’ll see something from Sterling & Мишка in the near future? Never say never is our motto!

Store Spotting: The Art Star, Aaron Axelrod!

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

The West Coast Мишка branch has been pretty busy as of late so it was nice when native Los Angeles artist Aaron Axelrod stopped by the shop on his way to Burbank to do some crazy work at the NBC Studios (more on that later). Between a coffee & a cigarette, Aaron and I caught up on life’s latest events, the art business and how the Laker’s are looking poised for another parade down Figueroa.

After that, Aaron decided to do a little shopping before his hectic afternoon workload. There’s nothing like getting some fresh Мишка gear before a hard days work and Aaron’s been doing his thing in it all Spring.

Speaking of doing his thing, Aaron’s been on a tear ever since graduating CalArts a few years back. He spent a couple of years doing all of the exclusive Coachella artist portraits for Golden Voice along with numerous art shows and projects. Aaron is as self-efficient as they come in the art world. With a few projects coming up, Aaron’s been keeping busy working for Jay Leno’s Tonight Show. He’s been doing the backdrops where the musical performances take place. Pretty cool if you ask me, check it out above.

Store Spotting: A-Rock, Engineered to… Rock Forever!

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

A frequent visitor to 350 Broadway popped in for his weekly rounds not too long ago… However, this time he came by with a little surprise. Aaron-Joshua AKA A-Rock is a Brooklyn local and a heavy duty mopster. I’m sure you’ve probably spotted him at most of our events at 350 Broadway or the recaps of them online.

We’ve know ’round these parts for a while now that Aaron was down with the bear, but it wasn’t until this visit that we realized he was down for the bear for life!

On this particular visit A-Rock had to show off some handy work that his buddy had been working on… on Aaron. You see Aaron’s pal is  an aspiring tattoo artist and Aaron graciously offered up his forearm as a guinea pig. Aaron’s gt some balls there for his maiden tattoo voyage!

When asked “what would you like on your arm?” “Engineered to Destroy” popped into Aaron’s head. We’re flattered to know our tagline has such staying power! This of course reminded us of a few other fellas with who have really taken to our motto. Both Eddie and Jay previously got inked up with “Engineered to Destroy” tattoos and I’m sure that they’ll welcome Aaron to the club with open arms.

But wait he wasn’t done yet! Aaron was particularly proud of this Death Adders pendant that he fashioned together with the use of some household products and one of our patches. Since we tend to only drop jewelry that will eat into your rent, I must say kudos for to Aaron for economic ingenuity.

By the way, If you are looking for someone new and cool to follow hit up Aaron’s Twitter.

Store Spotting: The Good, The Bad & The Born Ugly!

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

For all you ollie popping, skateboard pushers out there who, like us, love to read Born Ugly magazine, you’ll be happy to hear that we just got a fresh re-up on the latest issue of the zine. And we were able to get this particular stash of zines hand delivered by the editor of Born Ugly himself, Michael Broth!

When Michael isn’t busy catching frontside boardslides in a bowl he’s fine tuning each issue of Born Ugly too meet the standards of all of their loyal fans. On this day Michael just happened to pop in to the grab a few tee’s for the up and coming warm weather and happened to realize that we were fresh out Born Uglys and brought us some more.

So after reaching into his bag of trick Mike grabbed a grip of mags and stickers for us to hand out. If I were you I’d hustle down to 350 Broadway and get your hands on the few that we still have laying around. These really tend to fly out the door the second we get them in. But if don’t have anymore swipes left on your Metrocard and can’t make it down here you can always download a PDF of their latest issue #666!
