See The #Seapunks URL & IRL

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

In anticipation of tonight’s two-year anniversary party for CULT, the dance party at Berlin in Chicago, the Chicago Reader‘s Miles Raymer did an interview with #seapunk magnates Zombelle and Ultrademon, nom de plumes of young bluehairs Shan Beaste and Albert Redwine. If you’ve found yourself asking “what exactly is #seapunk anyways?” then here’s the scoop straight from the sources (you could, of course, read Pictureplane‘s exhaustive breakdown on the Bloglin).

Conversely if you find yourself asking “how exactly do I get all of this teal hairdye out of my pillowcases?” then check out this interview to hear more from your fave tumblr phrendz. Also be sure to download the newest release on #seapunk oriented Coral Records, Curtis Vodka‘s Untitled EP which dropped earlier this week. Those of you in the Windy City, put on your seafoam Keep Watch Leggings and head over to Berlin tonight to see Ultrademon, Zombelle, Physical Therapy, Mykki Blanco, and more. PLUR 4 LYFE.

2 Years In The CULT? Already?!

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Time flies when you’re having fun, making gifs, and dying your hair teal doesn’t it guys? Chicago based party CULT has been bringing the windy city one of the best monthly events for 2 whole years now. Say wha?

That’s right folks, from witch house to post-rave to seapunk, CULT has seen it all and is ready to blow the roof off the sucka (that sucka being the venue, Berlin) to celebrate its two rotations around the sun. If the flier didn’t tip you to it, this is going to be a truly tumblr-ful evening, full of dancing, drinking, tweeting, retweeting, and hanging out with iFriends IRL! Leading off is DJ and remixer extraordinaire Physical Therapy.

Joining him will be rap mistress Mykki Blanco, the poet with the freshest style in the game. Also in attendance is trance dancer Shock Diamond, in addition to everyone’s favorite resident DJs, Teen Witch and Baby Bamboo. Then there’s the hosts!

The queen of tumblr herself, Molly Soda, will be there hosting (hopefully with pet rat in attendance), along with Claireypear, Jayme Darling, and the seapunk superteam of Zombelle and Ultrademon. All in all it’s shaping up to be a more than worthy celebration. We’ll see you there.

This CULT Has Gone #Seapunk

Monday, December 26th, 2011

What exactly are you supposed to do in this strange little week between Christmas and New Years. It’s not quite 2012, though it doesn’t really seem like 2011 either. I think the best bet is to keep yourself in a consistent state of calmness, tranquility, and most likely inebriation.

And we have the perfect thing for ya! At least those of you lucky enough to live in Chicago. CULT will be happening this Thursday at Berlin, and it’s final appearance in 2011 should prove to be very punk. #Seapunk that is. Learn about it.

Coral Records, the agreed upon arbiter of all things teal and PLUR is bringing out their best, brightest, and most aquatic to make this CULT one to remember. Get ready to get wet with Ultrademon and the seafoam chanteuse herself Zombelle.

As always, house DJs Teen Witch  and Baby Bamboo will also be there, along with a dude from the Real World apparently? Cool! See ya out there.

A Raw CULT of Witches

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Hey Chicago, wanna party? Did that sound creepy? Well maybe it’s because I’m in a CULT! Naw, just kidding. Well, not really, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is, this Thursday it’s time for another edition of our all out midwestern dance party CULT, at Chicago’s Berlin Nightclub. Boy howdy, who’s ready to rave their faces off? Still creepy huh?

Self-described PSYCHOTEK mavens Yen Tech (ah, the world of genres) will be throwing down along with W/E Boo. Then, as always, there’s the resident part DJ’s Baby Bamboo and Teen Witch to keep things rolling along. So throw on your Heaven’s Gate Nike’s, say a prayer to Xenu, and I’ll see you at the CULT.

Chicago: Joakim Joins the CULT

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

If you’re in Chicago, you know Мишка is down with CULT, the monthly party thrown by residents Teen Witch and Baby Bamboo. When the DJs promise everything from “juke, bitch tracks and acid to drone, UK funky and tribal house,” what’s not to like?

For this month’s Ghost Beach edition, CULT hosts Joakim (France) and Top8 DJs (NYC). A powerhouse in the electronic music scene for over a decade, Joakim’s eclectic taste is a perfect fit for the genre-busting night. This Thursday, keep your Kool Aid at home and revel in the underground with CULT.

Please Help Launch Teen Witch the Magazine; Guaranteed 2 Be Awesome!

Saturday, June 11th, 2011

Zain Curtis, known to more people as Teen Witch and co-founder of The Ratcatchers blog, is loved around these parts. He’s had a recent Sounds from the Otherside dedicated to him and Мишка’s support for his Chicago based dance party, CULT. But outside the Bloglinverse he’s also been carving out a special place for himself in the history of the weird world of Net Art. Teen Witch’s work unabashedly borrows and appropriates from pop cultural themes, sub cultural memes, and underground radical queer culture to filter it all through a sort of psychedelic-techno, children’s cartoon aesthetic.

Zain recently launched a kickstarter to create a magazine appropriately entitled Teen Witch and knowing Zain, it’s going to be totally awesome. Physical magazines are slowly and sadly becoming obsolete, so supporting a purely independent art magazine geared towards “putting BOP and J-14 through a kaleidoscope, aiming to honor and give praise to the gay and trans youth underground scene” is something that should be high on your to-do list.

Have you ever caught yourself daydreaming about lying in a hammock with JTT when your parents weren’t home? Well your dream may come true. TW’s interactive quizzes will give you the indefinite answer you’ve been looking for. Can you hear the wedding bells now? Exposing the likes of teen pop singer-songwriter Jenna Rose, Japanese virtual pop star Hatsune Miku, House and soul extraordinaire Alexis Penney and, “the Black Sailor Moon”, New York’s raptress Mykki Blanco, TW is daring to steal your heart away from JTT.

Donaters to the cause will be treated to a wide variety of “thank you” packages ranging from personalized tweets, being listed in the first issue, copies of the mag, pins, CDs all the way to lavish Diva bundles featuring Teen Witch T-shirts courtesy of NVR MND and even a hand-painted denim back patch! Donations close in 20 or so days, so lets make this ‘zine a reality, it’ll be worth it.

If you’re interested in contributing and have more questions please email Teen Witch directly for more information.

Goddamn You Cultists Know How To Have a Good Time!

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Looks like last week’s CULT party in Chicago was a night to remember. I’m always a little remiss when I have to write these posts about parties I missed because I always end up thinking about how I was just probably sitting on my couch watching Chopped: All Stars and eating dollar dumplings from down the street while others were out having a good time. #LackOfInitiative.

Maluca is always a hoot live though, so this looks particularly fun. Apparently at some point she got a big ol’ Keep Watch sticker plastered on her forehead, which is a good look. Seems someone was also partaking in the wonders of our Мишка slipmats. Oh bloody eyeball, what can’t you do?

Check the gallery below. All the pics are courtesy of A/S/L Media.

Join This CULT, It’s Mad Decent!

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Mad Decent? More like mad awesome *rimshot*! If you live in Chicago, or just feel like taking a trip, then make sure to get your tuccus to the Berlin Club in Chi-city for the latest installment of CULT! This time, we’ve recruited up and coming Mad Decent starlet Maluca to set the night off right. I’ve been to a few Maluca shows and have been summarily impressed at each one.

She’s a one woman party machine. It’s also got the Sounds From The Other Side spotlighted Teen Witch, co-founder of the CULT party and all around musical madman. Coming along for the ride is Baby Bamboo, the other resident DJ. This party’s gonna be so good, it’ll turn the city upside poʍu¡
