Because motherfuckers refuse to read subtitles, here's the trailer for Spike Lee's remake of Park Chan Wook's seminal Oldboy. If you're unfamiliar with the original Korean film, it's the story of a dude kidnapped for 20 years, who's released to take revenge on his captors. It's one of the rawest movies of the last decade. Dudes get beat with hammers. Animals get eaten alive. Drunk Koreans sing karaoke. Simultaneously, wildly violent and poetic. I can not stress enough, that you should watch this movie. This remake though...I dunno man. To be fair, this trailer looks as faithful to the style and visuals of the original film as possible. Spike Lee is a great director when he doesn't get sucked into a pit of broad racial commentary, Josh Brolin can act his ass off, and Elizabeth Olsen almost redeems her sisters post Full House existence. However, something just feels off about this whole enterprise, the original Oldboy is only ten years old. It's beautifully shot, tightly written, and paced. It's damn near perfect. The only "flaw" it has; it's in Korean. I guess that's enough to warrant remake for 'Murica. I'mma preemptively say "fuck this movie".
